Puerto Madrynis located on the Atlantic coast in the province of Chubut. This town is the starting point for visiting the two principal protected natural areas, Peninsula Valdes and Punta Tombo.

In 1999 the area known as Peninsula Valdes was declared Natural World Heritage by the UNESCO. It is worldwide known because Southern Right Whales mate and calve in these waters during the months from June to December. It is also important to highlight the variety of fauna in this zone: Elephant Seals, South American Sea Lions, Orcas, Magellanic Penguins, Commerson’s Dolphins, Dolphins, Lesser rheas, Guanacos, Patagonian maras and a variety of sea birds.

Puerto Madrynwas declared Capital of Diving in Argentina. Many of those who love diving visit it because of the clear and deep waters of Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José to be in better contact with the marine fauna.

Climate

Although Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes are located in Patagonia, they have a moderate climate which is influenced by the ocean. In summer the days are warm and nights are cool; during winter the days are cool and nights are cold. Rainfall is scarce in this region, reaching 200 mm per year.

When to travel?

The importance of this region is determined by the local fauna. The best time to travel is when this fauna can be seen.

How long?

We recommend staying two or three nights in Puerto Madryn.
