Saltais a well preserved colonial city and is also the starting point destination to visit the different landscapes in this zone. A good option is to take the famous Train to the Clouds, a masterpiece of engineering. Travelling to the north, La Puna and Salinas Grandes (Salt Fields) are an impacting destination which shows a completely different way of life.

The city is surrounded by an amazing landscape and it is a tourist attraction for thousands of travelers. Its steep cobbled streets where time seems to stand still. The simplicity and kindness of its people make this city and ideal place to visit. The city of Salta is one of the Argentine cities which has most kept its colonial architecture.


Climate

The climate is very changeable depending on the height we are at. Beyond that, you must consider that there is a big thermal amplitude, so it is advisable to always carry warm clothes for the evenings. Summers can be very hot at midday and cool at night; in autumn and spring the climate y agreeable during the day, with cool nights and in winter the days are cool and nights are cold.

When to travel?

Any time of the year is recommendable for travelling to this region, although the best time for visiting Salta and the North West is from March to November to avoid the summer months which can be very hot during the day.

How long?

We recommend staying at least four nights in Salta to visit the principal attractions. In case you were to want to extend your trip to Tucuman and spend a night in Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca Valley) it is recommendable to spend at least one week in this area.

Unmissable attractions

Train to the Clouds, Salt Fields and Cuesta del Lipan. Humahuaca Valley, Valles Calchaquies, Quebrada de las Flechas and Cafayate. Tasting the specialities of the local cuisine is a must: “empanadas”, “humita en chala” and “dulce de cayote”.
