The Ibera Marshlands are an enormous wetland of approximately 15 to 20 square km –it is the second largest after the wetlands in Brazil- the Iberá Marshlands are located in the province of Corrientes. The ecosystem in this region is subtropical and tropical; it is formed by marshes, streams and lagoons, with a great variety of local fauna.

Many of these species are endangered and at risk of extinction, that is why this is one of the last remaining habitats. Among these threatened species we can mention the Marsh Deer, the Pampas Deer, the capybara, the aguara-guazu (manned wolf), the broad-snouted caiman, the yacare caiman, the South American otter and birds such as the guira cuckoo. The flora is also varied and has many species such as the water hyacinth and the water-poppy which form enormous floating islands.

Since 1983 an area of approximately 13,000 square km has been declared Provincial Nature Reserve. The Ibera Marshlands are a wetland of international importance.

Climate

Although the region is subtropical, the climate in the Ibera Marshlands is tropical due to the high humidity in the atmosphere. The maximum temperature in summer can be over 50°C and the minimum in winter could reach 5°C. The heavy rains are usual during autumn and spring.

When to travel?

We suggest avoiding the summer months due to the high temperatures. Autumn and spring are seasons with milder temperatures but with more rainfall. During the high season in winter it is ideal for watching caimans and some migratory birds which fly from the south escaping from the harsh weather.

How long?

We recommend staying 2 or 3 nights, to take advantage and enjoy the beauty of the place and the great diversity of local flora and fauna.

Unmissable attractions

Guided visit to the Nature Reserve, strolls around the marshlands and horse riding.
