This activity Walking on Ice, Grey Glacier is amazing because passengers can enjoy a unique experience: Walk on the ice of a glacier! This is on the Grey Glacier, part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Departures are at 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 2:30 pm.

This Ice Field is the third source of drinkable water in the planet.

The activity Walking on Ice, Grey Glacier starts at the base camp located on the northern shore of the beautiful Lake Grey, on the Grey Glacier.

Here, the walking on ice guides will give an introductory talk, and explain the tour, the time it will take and also check the equipment on each passenger. Then, you will board a Zodiac boat during 15 minutes till you reach the west branch of the Grey Glacier.

After arrival, you will disembark at the nunatak (rock island within the glacier) and start walking on it around one hour, until you reach the ice.

Before getting onto the glacier, the guide will give a safety talk, explaining the techniques for walking on ice and the correct use of the equipment. After the talk, we start exploring this wonderful glacier for around three hours.

We can see cracks, rivers, lagoons, tunnels in different shades of blue. After this unforgettable experience on the glacier, we will return to the base camp.

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunblock
  • Gloves (to protect your hands from the ice at the glacier)
  • Woolen hat to protect yourself from the cold and the sun
  • Trekking clothes
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers (GORETEX)
  • Trekking shoes (IMPORTANT to adjust the crampons properly)
  • Camera, enough memory cards and spare batteries
  • Snack
  • Water bottle (Nalgene)
  • Ziploc bags or any other (to keep and take away your litter)
