Martillo Islandis part of theEstancia Harberton, and home to Magellanic penguins between September and April. The rookery hosts around 1000 nests, and is one of the three Magellanic penguin rookeries in Tierra del Fuego. There is also a small colony of 9 breeding couples of gentoo penguins (Pygocelis Papua), the only one in South America.

Male Magellanic penguins arrive first in the island at the end of September, choosing the best place to build their nests or fixing the used nest during the previous breeding season. These nests are deep, underground holes that dig in the sand or soft soil.

Days later, the females arrive, which usually always mate with the same male. At the end of October and beginning of November they lay 2 eggs per couple. And in the middle of November and first weeks of December, the first pigeons begin to be born, remaining in their nests for about a month.

The activity has two departures: at 8am and at 2:30 pm, from the Ushuaia Tourist Pier. From there, we will drive in modern minibuses to the northeast, along national routes 3 & J, on the way to the legendary Farm Harberton (first farm on the island, founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges, located 90 kilometers from Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel.

We will sail from Harberton Pier in the direction of Martillo Island, a 15-minute ride on a semi-rigid boat (suitable for sailing in the region). Once on the island, we will walk for 1 hour between the Magellanic penguins and Papuas together with a specialized guide, living a unique and unforgettable experience!
