Patagonia is the name given to the vast territory that occupies the southern part of Argentina and Chile. The principal attractions in Argentina are in the lakes district, next to the Andes chain where Bariloche stands out; Puerto Madryn and Peninsula Valdes are located on the Atlantic coast, and El Calafate, the Moreno Glacier and Ushuaia are located in southern Patagonia.

The city of San Carlos de Bariloche is located among mountains and woods, on the shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, in the province of Río Negro,1,640 km from the city of Buenos Aires.

It is a tourist attraction because of the many activities you can do in this region. During the summer, many people travel to this region to go fly fishing for trouts and salmons. This zone is also a tourist attraction because of the different sports alternatives: trekking, rafting in dozens of rivers, walks in millenary woods, getting to the summit of the mountains that surround the city.

In winter, with the coming of the snow, the ski season starts; the Cerro Catedral is one of the most important and best known ski resorts in the country.

Mountain bike riding and horse riding, added to the possibility of camping in the woods that surround the city, will make you want to visit Bariloche again and again.

San Carlos de Bariloche is also well known by youngsters due to its night life, its famous discos and its pubs.

Climate

The climate in this region is continental and cold although the temperature could be variable independently from the season. On the same day we can have a big thermal amplitude. During months such as January, during the day, the temperature could reach 20/28°C and occasionally even more than 30°C. In the evening, around 15°C. In mid winter, during the day -10°C/1°C and at night 0°C or less. The wet season generally begins in May and could be very changeable, depending on where we are. In Bariloche it rains around 500 mm per year, while the nearest we get to Chile, annual rainfall could reach 3,500 mm per year.

When to travel?

This region can be visited the whole year round, though the activities will vary, depending on the season you choose. In summer, all outdoor activities can be enjoyed, while in winter, the principal attraction is the Cerro Catedral and its snow. An excellent time of the year to visit Bariloche is during spring, when the climate is very agreeable and the last days of the skiing season can be enjoyed at lower prices and more relaxed.
